WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition called motion 664 for debate on Wednesday, April 12. If passed, the motion provides direction from the Legislative Assembly to the Yukon government to help Yukon communities celebrate the 125th anniversary of the territory joining Confederation.
The motion, tabled on March 29, 2023, by Porter Creek North MLA Geraldine Van Bibber, reads:
That this House urges the Government of Yukon to work with Yukon communities to assist with marking Yukon’s 125th anniversary with celebrations in 2023.
“Yukoners should have the opportunity to celebrate the Yukon officially joining Confederation as a separate territory,” said Van Bibber. “This motion directs the government to find ways to allow every Yukon community to plan events for their residents. It provides an excellent opportunity for all Yukoners to learn more about our history as a jurisdiction in Canada.”
The Yukon was split out of the Northwest Territories in 1898 following the Klondike Gold Rush. On June 13 of that year, the Yukon Territory Act created the Yukon Territory as a separate Canadian jurisdiction and placed its capital at Dawson City.
