Yukon Party Caucus Statement on the Passing of Rolf Hougen

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                                 September 6, 2024

“On behalf of the Yukon Party Official Opposition, I would like to pass on our condolences to the family and friends of Rolf Hougen.

“Mr. Hougen’s contributions to the territory are immeasurable. From providing goods through Hougen’s Department Store and various businesses to expanding the Yukon’s reach to the outside world through WHTV, CKRW Radio, and the CanCom Satellite system, to supporting the Yukon’s arts and culture, Hougen embodied the Yukon spirit of not only entrepreneurship but philanthropy.

“Rolf was always thinking of the Yukon, even during his travels around the world, and brought some of those ideas back to the territory. The most notable are the busts of various Yukon historical figures that we see in downtown Whitehorse; an idea he got while on his honeymoon in Vienna in 1955.

“Whether it was business, telecommunications, or the arts, Mr. Hougen and his wife Marg worked hard to ensure the Yukon and the North were recognized nationally.

“Rolf’s legacy will be carried on through the Hougen family and his many endeavours that continue today. He will be missed.”

--Leader Currie Dixon.

“Another Yukon icon has left us.

“Rolf Hougen was instrumental in changing the face of the Yukon. Be it retail, television, radio, car dealerships, or the arts, Rolf, with the support of his family, created the Hougen Group of Companies which delivered goods and services for the benefit of all Yukoners.

“My sincere condolences to the family.”
