WHITEHORSE – On May 27th, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association wrote to the Yukon Liberal government expressing concerns that some of the government’s actions may violate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
These actions, along with millions of dollars in new spending and broad new powers that allows the Liberal government to override territorial laws, have been brought in without any legislative oversight or scrutiny.
“Premier Silver has refused to allow the Legislative Assembly to sit, denying MLAs the opportunity to debate unprecedented restrictions that are affecting the lives and freedom of Yukon citizens,” said Brad Cathers, Official Opposition Critic for Democratic Institutions. “These unilateral decisions by government are having a huge economic impact on local business owners and their employees. While we agree that reasonable public health measures should be in place during this pandemic, people have the right to expect that their elected representatives will debate these measures.”
“Legislative Assemblies across the country have reconvened to discuss the response to COVID-19. It is time for this Liberal government to stop hiding from questions, and call the Legislative Assembly back.”
