Where Did the $3.85 Million Go?

WHITEHORSE – On March 13th, 2019 the Minister of Highways and Public Works announced that the Government of Yukon had budgeted $5 million to be spent on upgrading the Mayo aerodrome during the Summer of 2019.

On October 30th, 2019, it was confirmed by the Minister that only $1.15 million of those funds have been spent. This means that the remaining $3.85 million of the promised funding has lapsed for this fiscal year.

However, the Supplementary Estimates do not show a reduction in spending within Highways and Public Works. This suggests that the $3.85 million has been reallocated internally to other projects.

On October 30th and 31st the Minister of Highways and Public Works was asked to explain where this $3.85 million of taxpayers’ money has gone.

He has refused to provide an answer.

This raises the question: Was the Mayo project purposely delayed so that the Liberals could reallocate the money towards other projects they have mismanaged and gone over budget?

By not answering this important question about where this $3.85 million of taxpayers’ money has gone, the Liberals are avoiding oversight from the Legislative Assembly.

So much for open and transparent government.
