Liberals Need to Clarify Future of St. Elias Adult Group Home

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                                    January 10, 2024

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition is asking the Liberal government to clarify reports about the future of the St. Elias Adult Group Home in Whitehorse. Yukoners have reported that the operating model may be changing at the Hoge Street facility and that the residents may be relocated.

Opened in April 2016, the 10-bed purpose-built group home was constructed to provide support, programming, and housing for adults with a cognitive disability. It was designed to provide an enhanced space for the delivery of support services and programs and more inclusive access for residents, their family, and community support networks.

“This facility was constructed and tailored to the specific needs of adults with developmental challenges who require a high standard of care,” said Health and Social Services Critic Brad Cathers. “Many of the residents have been living there long-term, and their lives would be disrupted if they had to find a new home. If the operating model is indeed changing, the Liberal government needs to clarify what is happening, what the impact will be on residents, the costs associated with any changes, and the rationale behind any such decision.”
