Yukon Party Pushes Issues that Matter to Yukoners in Fall Sitting

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                                November 23, 2023

WHITEHORSE –The Yukon Party Official Opposition used the 28-day 2023 fall sitting of the Yukon Legislative Assembly to seek solutions for the many issues that are affecting Yukoners. The Liberal government was unwilling to even acknowledge many of the issues raised by Yukoners and continued to appear out of new ideas and out of touch with the reality people are facing.

“We asked throughout the sitting about the plan to address the cost of living, mainly the removal of the carbon tax,” said Leader Currie Dixon. “While the federal government has paused the tax on home heating oil for three years, with growing calls from across the country to eliminate the tax, the territorial Liberals continue to be an outlier and affirmed their support for the tax.”

The Yukon Party Official Opposition also brought up concerns with dwindling services in rural Yukon, housing and the delays getting residential lots to market, crime and community safety, and education, specifically the lack of teachers on call. Health care, including the failure to attract more doctors to the Yukon and cuts to hospital services, were also major issues.

“I would like to thank Yukoners for bringing these important issues to our attention, so we can do our jobs and hold the government to account,” added Dixon. “We look forward to getting direct feedback from our constituents about the 28 days in the house and beginning preparations over the winter months for the Spring sitting.”

The territorial Liberals clearly showed they are running on empty, and the few new initiatives come from their Confidence and Supply Agreement (CASA) with the Yukon NDP. Despite Yukoners getting shortchanged on many policy commitments in the CASA, Kate White and the NDP continue to keep this floundering government in power in return for an additional $270,000 per year in caucus funding directly from the Liberals.
