“I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to the newly elected premier of the Northwest Territories RJ Simpson.

“This is Simpson’s third term serving the residents of Hay River North and he brings a lot of experience as a legislator to the job of premier.

“I was especially pleased to hear the new premier’s comments on the carbon tax. Simpson told the NWT Legislative Assembly on December 7: ‘…the north is not the south. The idea of the carbon tax is maybe a good idea for some jurisdictions, but it doesn’t work for us.’

“I could not agree more.

“I support the new premier’s pledge to seek a carbon tax exemption for the NWT, and I would hope for the sake of Yukoners struggling under the rising cost of living that the Yukon’s premier would join his colleague’s efforts to seek a pan-northern carbon tax exemption from Ottawa.”
