WHITEHORSE - Today Members of the Legislative Assembly voted unanimously to urge the Government to support the City of Whitehorse and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 254 as they work towards the development of a new Veterans Square in Whitehorse. This would be a space where large events and ceremonies could take place to honour Yukon’s veterans and members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
The motion that was passed unanimously, tabled by MLA Wade Istchenko reads:
THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to work with the City of Whitehorse and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 254 in the planning and development of a veterans square.
The current location of Veteran’s Square is located between City Hall and the Fire Hall along 2nd Avenue. The limited space and proximity to a busy downtown street creates safety concerns.
“Those who have attended any events at the existing cenotaph in Whitehorse know that we need a larger dedicated space to honour those who have served this country. Out of respect to our veterans and with the goal of improving access to a place where we can recognize them, supporting the planning of this project is great news,” said Istchenko. “I am pleased to get unanimous support for this motion and look forward to seeing this important project move forward.”
