Yukon Party Calls on Government to Provide Tax Rebate for Fertility Treatments

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                                          April 5, 2022

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition is introducing a motion calling for the Liberal government to offer a refundable tax credit for those families who receive fertility treatments provided by a licensed medical practitioner or infertility treatment clinic. Medical expenses would also be included.

The motion reads as follows:

THAT this house urges the Government of Yukon to introduce legislation to create a refundable tax credit to subsidize the cost of certain fertility treatments provided by medical practitioners or infertility treatment clinics, and for surrogacy-related medical expenses.

The Yukon Party promised to support healthy beginnings for families in the last election by introducing a tax credit for in-vitro fertilization and support for adoptive parents. The motion also calls for the rebate to be available to all Yukoners making use of surrogacy services.

Nova Scotia introduced a similar program in their budget last week.

“We understand it can be tough in more ways than one for some parents who are trying to expand their families through fertility treatments and surrogacy,” said Critic for the Women and Gender Equality Directorate Yvonne Clarke. “Not only is it emotionally draining but it is also costly. We hope by providing a tax rebate for those families, it will be one less stressful item to deal with.”
