Yukon Party Calls for Legislation to Address Domestic Violence

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                 December 1, 2021

WHITEHORSE – On Wednesday, Yukon Party MLA Yvonne Clarke introduced a motion in the Yukon Legislative Assembly calling on the government to introduce important legislation to address domestic violence.

The motion reads as follows:

THAT this house urges the Government of Yukon to develop and consult on a new law that will empower Yukoners to have the right to get information about potentially harmful or dangerous intimate partners, which in many jurisdictions is know as “Clare’s Law.”

Implementing Clare’s Law legislation would ensure that in defined circumstances, people at risk of domestic violence may be notified of their partners’ previous history of domestic violence or violent acts.

“There are many jurisdictions across Canada where Clare’s Law is already implemented,” said Clarke. “The statistics show Yukon has the highest rate of gender-based violence in the north. This much-needed legislation will hopefully reduce this violence and help keep Yukoners’ safe.”

The introduction of “Clare’s Law” was also a promise made by the Yukon Party in the recent election campaign.
