WHITEHORSE – Today Yukon MLAs will debate the possibility of eliminating Daylight Saving Time in Yukon. The debate will occur during Opposition Motion Day.
Motion No. 251, submitted by Kluane MLA Wade Istchenko, reads:
THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to initiate consultations with Yukon residents about the possible elimination of daylight saving time in Yukon and report back the results of that consultation to this House before the conclusion of the 2018 Fall Sitting.
“We have heard from individual Yukoners and groups about how Daylight Saving Time affects them, particularly with regards to family schedules, health, energy consumption and productivity,” stated Istchenko. “We felt that bringing forward this motion would be a good way to encourage a discussion on an issue that a lot of Yukoners are interested in. We purposely crafted the motion so that it doesn’t commit the government to eliminating the time change but instead kick starts a conversation with Yukoners to get their views.”
The motion asks the government to initiate consultations with Yukoners and report back with results before the end of the 2018 Fall Sitting.
“I think this is a great opportunity for all members of this Assembly to work across the aisle and work collaboratively to identify solutions based on the views of Yukoners.” added Istchenko.
