WHITEHORSE – At a public hearing on December 7, 2022, the Department of Finance revealed that as of March 31, 2022, it was sitting on close to $18.9 million in carbon tax revenue.

According to the 2021-22 Public Accounts documents, the majority of that money, $15.8 million, is money owed to Yukon businesses.

“The Yukon Government is sitting on almost $16 million that should be in the hands of Yukon businesses,” said Economic Development Critic Geraldine Van Bibber. “At a time when businesses in the territory are struggling with rising costs, including the rising cost of the carbon tax, the Yukon Government needs to return that money to Yukon businesses to help them keep costs down.”

While the Liberal government has repeatedly said it would return 100 percent of all Carbon Tax revenue to Yukoners, it seems that is not the case. The Public Accounts show a trend of Yukon Government taking in more money for the carbon tax than they are giving out.

The amount of carbon tax received from the Government of Canada and distributed to Yukoners can be found on page 13 of the 2021-2022 Yukon Public Accounts. Here is a link to the report.

The Yukon Party Official Opposition is calling on the Liberal government to return this money to Yukon businesses as soon as possible.
