FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 12, 2023
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ranj Pillai on becoming the new leader of the Yukon Liberal Party, and the Yukon’s 10th Premier when he is sworn in on Saturday.
“I would also like to thank outgoing Yukon Premier Sandy Silver for his work over the years.
“The Yukon Party Official Opposition looks forward to working with the new premier to advance the concerns of Yukoners who are facing immense challenges as we enter 2023 such as the rising cost of living, a lack of attainable housing, and a substance use crisis.
“Unlike his predecessor, I sincerely hope the new premier will extend more respect to the Yukon Legislative Assembly that has passed numerous motions urging the Premier to take several actions that have been previously ignored.
- Asking for the resignation from Cabinet of the former Minister of Education and current Deputy Premier Tracy-Anne McPhee after sexual abuse at a Yukon school was uncovered;
- Directing the premier to seek the advice of the Yukon’s Conflict of Interest Commissioner in relation to the dealings of the former Minister of Health and Social Services in regard to a project in Old Crow;
- Urging the Government of Canada to exempt home heating fuel from the Government of Canada’s carbon-pricing system; and
- Ensuring that territorial policing resources are not diverted to assist in the implementation of the Government of Canada’s gun ‘buy-back’ program.
“My Yukon Party Caucus colleagues and I continue to field many concerns from Yukoners, and we look forward to sharing a better vision for the Yukon when the new premier seeks a legitimate mandate from Yukoners with a general election.”
