Speaker of Yukon Legislative Assembly Resigns

WHITEHORSE—Speaker David Laxton has informed the Premier that he is resigning from the role of Speaker of the Yukon Legislative Assembly and from the Yukon Party Caucus, for personal reasons.

“I have been privileged to serve as Speaker these past four and a half years,” said Laxton. “However, I have decided that at this time, I need to step back from this role and focus on personal matters.”

Laxton will continue to serve the residents of Porter Creek Centre as an Independent MLA in the Yukon Legislative Assembly.

“It’s important that my constituents continue to have a representative so I will honour my commitment to them in this difficult time,” added Laxton.

A vote will be held in the Yukon Legislative Assembly today to determine who will serve as Speaker for the remainder of this mandate.
