Road Safety Not a Priority for the Yukon Liberals

WHITEHORSE – The Minister of Highways has made it clear to Yukoners that the safety of roads and highways in their communities is not high on the list of Liberal budget priorities.

On April 15, 2019, MLA Patti McLeod tabled a petition in the Legislature signed by 373 Yukoners, asking the Minister of Highways to install street lights along the highway from the junction of Ravenhill Drive to the subdivision of 2 ½ mile. Despite the fact that this would significantly improve safety on the Robert Campbell Highway, the Liberals have refused to take action.

MLA Patti McLeod has been asking the Minister to address this important issue dating back to January 6, 2017. After over two years of inaction the Minister has indicated that instead of taking action he will only continue to study the issue.

This is only the most recent example of the Liberals not prioritizing highway safety.

Earlier this month it was discovered that the Liberals have cut the territory’s highway maintenance budget by $2.5 million. Earlier this year the Liberal government also refused to commit to a Yukon Party Official Opposition request to implement Slow-Down-Move-Over Legislation to better protect RCMP and emergency workers pulled over on the side of the road.

Meanwhile, while the Liberals have neglected these important issues, they have given the Premier a raise and increased the budget for the Liberal Cabinet Office.
