Private Sector Jobs Down Under Liberal Government

WHITEHORSE – Government statistics contradict claims by the Liberal Government that they are “getting out of the business of doing business” and helping grow the private sector.

According to the Government of Yukon’s Bureau of Statistics, during the Liberal government’s mandate private sector employment in the territory has significantly decreased while public sector employment has increased.

  • Private sector employment was 12,200 in December 2016.
  • Private sector employment was 11,300 in February 2019.

This is a decrease of 900 private sector jobs under the Liberals.

  • Public sector employment was 8,000 in December 2016.
  • Public sector employment was 9,300 in February 2019.

This is an increase of 1,300 public sector jobs under the Liberals.

The number of people who are unemployed in Yukon has increased by 50% when compared to this time last year.

After previously providing the Legislative Assembly with numbers suggesting his government added 659 FTEs, Premier Silver now says the Liberals have added 450 FTEs to the Government of Yukon.
