WHITEHORSE – Today the Official Opposition brought forward the following motion for debate in the Legislative Assembly:
THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to not implement a territorial sales tax.
The Liberals refused to support this motion.
Instead of ruling out a territorial sales tax the Liberals drastically amended the motion by deleting the words “not implement a territorial sales tax.” The new motion read:
THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to fully consider the options provided by the Financial Advisory Panel and the views of Yukoners in developing appropriate ways to strengthen the territory’s financial position.
This new motion asks the government to fully consider the options of the Financial Advisory Panel which includes a sales tax.
