Liberals Still Have No Plan to Reduce Unsafe Camping Practices

WHITEHORSE – On April 6th, the Liberal government, without receiving direction from the Chief Medical Officer, announced that campgrounds would be closed and would not reopen until June.

On May 5th, the Yukon Party Official Opposition wrote to the Liberal government raising concerns that we had heard from Yukoners about unsafe camping practices resulting from the Liberal’s decision to shut down campgrounds. Those unsafe practices stemming from people camping along the sides of highways and backroads include increased fire risks, garbage, and illegal sewage dumping.

In the May 5th letter the Yukon Party asked the government what their plan to manage those concerns was. 24 days later and the Liberals have still not provided a plan to mitigate these concerns.

“The decision to shut down the campgrounds rests solely with the Liberal cabinet and Minister Frost,” said Wade Istchenko, Official Opposition critic for Environment. “The fact that the Liberals did this without so much as a plan to address increased pressures on our back country such as garbage, sewage dumping and unsafe fire practices is extremely concerning and completely irresponsible.”
