Liberals Amend Premier’s Own Motion Seeking Infrastructure Information

WHITEHORSE - During motion debate yesterday, the Liberal government amended an opposition motion seeking all applications of infrastructure funding submitted to Canada.

The wording of this motion was taken nearly verbatim from one tabled by the Premier while he was the lone member of the Third Party.

The Motion for the Production of Papers, brought forward on Wednesday for debate by MLA Geraldine Van Bibber, reads:

THAT this House do issue an order for the return of all current applications for infrastructure funding that the Government of Yukon has submitted to the Government of Canada.

The Motion for the Production of Papers, brought forward by MLA Sandy Silver on April 20, 2016 reads:

THAT this House do order the return of all current applications for infrastructure funding that the Government of Yukon has submitted to the Government of Canada.

Instead of living up to their own standards of openness and transparency that the Liberals claimed were necessary while in opposition, this Liberal government has once again shown Yukoners that they said one thing to get elected and are doing the complete opposite while in government.

Quotes of Interest:

“It is a straightforward request to make information on what the government is up to available to the public... It would also be a good step toward making the government more open and more accountable.”

– MLA Sandy Silver, April 20, 2016 (Yukon Legislative Assembly)

“In a sense, what we are doing this afternoon is amending our own motion, because it was the Premier’s motion.”

– Minister Richard Mostyn, March 28, 2018 (Yukon Legislative Assembly)
