WHITEHORSE – As Yukoners and homebuilders look for new residential lots to build on, it seems inevitable that once again, the Liberals will miss their own timeline for the release of lots in Whistle Bend.

The Minister of Community Services repeatedly told the Legislative Assembly during the spring sitting that the contract award for Whistle Bend Phase 8 lots would happen shortly after the completion of the sitting in time for the summer construction season.

However, according to the Yukon Government’s contract registry, the Phase 8 contract that closed on April 7 has yet to be awarded. The lots are now in danger of missing the planned completion date of October 15.

In 2021, the same Minister promised the release of lots in the fall. That of course did not happen after the Liberals cancelled the tender and further delayed lot availability.

“Everyone knows the Yukon is facing a housing crisis and this spring I was clear that now is the time for action,” said Housing Critic and Porter Creek Centre MLA Yvonne Clarke. “We have continued to urge the Liberal government to prioritize lot development and availability. These repeated delays in getting Whistle Bend lots on the market only makes things worse, and leaves Yukon families and new Yukoners scrambling to find a place to live.”

The Liberals need to award the contract and update Yukoners if these delays have jeopardized completion of Phase 7 this summer or the tendering of Phase 9 work that was promised for the fall.
