WHITEHORSE – Yesterday, the Official Opposition pressed the government on a number of housing issues across the territory.
In Question Period, Official Opposition Housing Critic Wade Istchenko asked the Minister about the current waitlist for social and seniors housing, as well as how many new units the government intends on building to address those waitlists.
“Significant investments in the creation of social and seniors housing have been made since 2011 in the Yukon,” said Istchenko. “To properly assess the demand for these units going forward, it would be helpful for the Minister to tell us how many people are currently on the waitlist for social and seniors’, in Whitehorse as well as in the communities.”
The Minister did not provide details with regards to how many are on the waitlist, nor was she able to tell the House how many units her government was planning to build to address the waitlist.
Istchenko also asked for an update on the Vimy Heritage Housing Project.
“We would like to know when the Minister last met with society representatives and when the project is scheduled to proceed,” added Istchenko
The Minister did not answer this question.
The Official Opposition will continue to stand up on behalf of constituents and all Yukoners looking to access quality, affordable housing in the territory.
