Hidden Valley Petition Gets Over 530 Signatures; No Response from Deputy Premier

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                 November 9, 2021

WHITEHORSE – On October 18, 2021, Lake Laberge MLA Brad Cathers presented a petition to the Legislative Assembly from parents and concerned members of the public. The petition demanded answers from former Minister of Education Tracy-Anne McPhee regarding serious issues at Hidden Valley Elementary starting in late 2019.

As of November 9, the petition had reached 535 signatures.

The petition asked the former Minister to clearly disclose to the public when she was made aware of the 2019 sexual assault at Hidden Valley, and what direction she gave department officials regarding communication.

As per Legislative Assembly rules, the government had up to eight sitting days to respond to the petition. On November 1, the current Minister of Education stood in the house to address the petition because the former Minister, who was the subject of the petition, once again refused to explain her actions.

“This government, and especially the former Minister of Education, continue to sidestep legitimate questions from Hidden Valley parents and the community,” said Cathers. “With the former minister’s failure to address this petition, and her disregard for a Legislative Assembly motion asking her to resign over this matter, it is way past time she start answering questions. Parents deserve answers now.”
