Federal Liberals Block Yukoners from Appearing on Gun Legislation

WHITEHORSE – On Thursday May 24, 2018 the Federal Liberal Government used their majority on the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security to vote down a motion calling two Yukon witnesses to testify on Bill C-71, An Act to amend certain Acts and Regulation in relation to firearms.

The motion, which was defeated by a vote of 5 to 3, read:

“That, given the importance of the rights impacted by C-71, including as noted by the Justice Minister, its potential impact on the right to be secure against unreasonable search and seizure, the Committee hold additional meetings to allow the following witnesses to testify:

  • Women Shooters of PEI
  • Dr. Caillin Langmann, Emergency Medicine Resident, Fellowship Program of the Royal College of Physicians Canada, Division of Emergency Medicine, McMaster University
  • Stacey Hassard, Leader of Official Opposition, Yukon
  • Andy McGrogan, President, Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police
  • Richard Munderich (Ajax Rod and Gun club in Ontario)
  • Gord Zealand – Yukon Fish and Game Association
  • BC Wildlife Federation – Harvey Andrusak
  • Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation – Derrell Crabbe
  • Bob Kierstead – Shooting Expert, International Firearms Instructor
  • Kerry Coleman – Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters
  • David Clement, Consumer Choice Centre
  • Manitoba Wildlife Federation
  • Fédération des Chasseurs et Pêcheurs du Québec
  • Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters
  • Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARN)”

This is just the latest example of the federal Liberal government treating Yukon as an afterthought.

  • On April 9th Yukon’s Official Opposition tabled a motion urging the Government of Canada to remove provisions of Bill C-71 that create a new long registry and to consult with Yukoners before any legislation passes.
  • On April 24th, after Premier Silver refused to stand up for Yukoners, the Yukon Party sent a letter to the Prime Minister asking for Yukoners to be consulted on any gun legislation before it goes forward.
