WHITEHORSE – Despite the Yukon Liberal government’s claims that local aviation companies will be fully exempt from the Liberal carbon tax scheme, it has been revealed that these companies will still be subject to the reporting requirements under the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act (GGPPA).
This information is revealed on Finance Canada’s website:
“Air carriers in the listed territories will continue to be subject to the GGPPA (e.g., reporting and filing requirements), as required, but ultimately the fuel charge will not be paid on any flights in the territories.” – Finance Canada
This statement seems to suggest that despite not having to pay the carbon tax, these aviation companies will still be subject to the administrative burden caused by the carbon tax legislation. This will undoubtedly come with cost implications for Northern aviation companies.
“It is unfortunate but unsurprising to find out that despite assurances that they will be exempt from the carbon tax, our northern aviation companies will still be required to file needless paperwork due to this massive tax scheme the Premier signed onto,” said Stacey Hassard, Leader of the Official Opposition. “We should be looking at ways to cut red tape for businesses, not throwing new and pointless paperwork at them.”
