WHITEHORSE – This past weekend, members of the Yukon Party Official Opposition attended the 31st Annual Dawson City International Gold Show to show their support for the placer mining industry and to highlight the Yukon Party’s continued commitment to stand up for mining and exploration in the territory.
Official Opposition Leader Stacey Hassard, Energy, Mines and Resources Critic Scott Kent, as well as MLAs Brad Cathers, Wade Istchenko and Geraldine Van Bibber traveled to Dawson City to hear from local placer miners, equipment suppliers and representatives from the service industry. They met with the Klondike Placer Miners’ Association and many individual members of the mining industry to hear about their interests and concerns about the future of mining in Yukon’s economy.
The MLAs heard a number of concerns from the mining community, particularly regarding the potential impacts that the Premier’s carbon tax scheme will have on their bottom line. Around the community of Dawson City, a number of concerns arose regarding the Liberal government’s breaking of their promise to pave the Dawson Runway and the building of a new facility for the Little Blue Daycare.
The Official Opposition will continue to listen to the concerns of the communities and the industries that drive our territory, and continue to hold to government to account for their promises.
