WHITEHORSE – In response to the cancellation of the popular annual Kluane Lake Fishing Derby, MLA for Kluane Wade Istchenko released the following statement:
“It is extremely disappointing to hear that the Kluane Lake Athletic Association has been forced to cancel its annual Fishing Derby.
“This is a huge event for our riding and is a major boost to the economy during the summer months.
“The cancellation is a result of failure to dredge the Destruction Bay Marina which is relied on heavily by local businesses, First Nations, tourism operators, and the residents of Kluane. Due to low water levels, the area requires this dredging to clear the silt and allow boats to dock at the lake.
“After urging the Minister of Highways and Public Works, Richard Mostyn, for 6 months to take action on the state of the Destruction Bay Marina, I unfortunately have received no commitment that the Liberal government intends to address this issue.
“As a result of inaction, a prominent organization will lose out on the annual revenue it generates from the derby and my riding will lose out on one of the biggest events of the year.
“I would like to see an immediate commitment from the Minister to fix the Destruction Bay Marina, and I will continue to push him on this issue.”
