Yukon Liberal leader fails Yukoners and defends cuts to transfer payments

  • Sandy Silver used first question to spin and defend cuts to federal transfers
  • Federal transfers were cut by $6.5 million this year

WHITEHORSE—Today Premier Darrell Pasloski challenged Yukon Liberal leader Sandy Silver for using his first question of the spring sitting in a vain attempt to shift the blame for federal transfer cuts to Yukon.

“Yukoners are disappointed that instead of representing their interests, the Yukon Liberal leader chose to defend cuts to our transfer payments,” Pasloski said. “Those cuts harm Yukon and Yukoners, and responsibility rests solely with the current federal government. His actions demonstrate that when it comes to choosing between what is best for Yukon and what is best for the Liberals, he’ll choose the Liberals.”

Yukon government was first informed of a $23 million cut to the territorial formula financing late in 2015. Pasloski immediately fought for Yukoners and convinced the federal Finance minister to reinstate a portion of the cut. The $6.5 million that were cut from transfers were part of Yukon’s long-term revenue projections and the revenue losses will compound year-over-year.
