New Speaker is first woman in Yukon history to serve in the role

WHITEHORSE—Yukon Party MLA for Watson Lake Patti McLeod was elected today as the first female Speaker of the Yukon Legislative Assembly, with Vuntut Gwitchin MLA Darius Elias elected as Deputy Speaker and Chair of Committee of the Whole.

“I am proud to have put forward MLA McLeod’s name as our new Speaker and MLA Elias as Deputy Speaker,” said Yukon Party Leader and Premier Darrell Pasloski. “I am especially pleased because MLA McLeod becomes the first woman in Yukon history to serve as Speaker of this assembly. She brings a great deal of experience and skill to her new role, having already served during this mandate as Deputy Speaker and Chair of Committee of the Whole. I am confident that she will do an excellent job in presiding over the work of this legislature in an impartial and fair manner.”

McLeod began serving as Speaker today, just after the legislative assembly resumed this afternoon.
“I am honoured to take on the new responsibility of Speaker of this assembly,” said McLeod. “I thank my fellow members for putting their trust in me and I will endeavour to serve this legislature and all Yukoners to the best of my ability.”

Elias also began acting in his new role this afternoon, during Committee of the Whole debate.
