Government Amends Election Promise

WHITEHORSE – Today the Official Opposition brought forward a motion for debate to ask the government to live up to their broken election promise to ensure any tenders for projects that are seasonally dependent be tendered no later than March of each year. As we are 26 days past the due date of this promise, the time for the government to tender these contracts is now.

The wording of the Liberal platform commitment was:

“A Liberal government would tender construction projects that are seasonally dependent no later than March of each year…”

The wording of the Official Opposition’s motion was:

“THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to live up to its election promise to tender seasonally dependent contracts by no later than March 31st of each year and to immediately place the contracts for the summer of 2017 on the tender management system.”

Rather than live up to this key platform commitment and, in a rare Orwellian move, the government moved an amendment to the motion and, effectively, their election promise. The new amended Liberal election promise is below:

“THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to live up to its election promise to tender major seasonally dependent contracts by no later than March 31st of each year and to immediately place the contracts for the summer of 2017 on the tender management system March 31, 2018.”

How many other election promises is the Liberal government intending to amend?
